How do you interpret what the phrase "taking the name of God in vain" means from a philosophical, historical, and linguistic point of view?

The phrase 'taking the name of God in vain' may not have sense at all. Let's see... is it 'God' the name of God? Hum... this is a theological problem... In fact, we don't know the name of the Christian /Catholic God - many philosophers consider m the One about nothing can be said or known.

We use the concept God to refer to any kind of God, so it doesn't refer to one and just one - its a Concept not a Proper Name. So... it's impossible for some religious to use the name of God in vain because... they don't know He's name.

Its just a contradiction - but people don't see it :).

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
