When young, a child's world largely revolves around herself, which is normal development. As they grow older, children gradually learn to share, to develop empathy and a sense of others' well being. By following these steps to build upon their natural growth, you can nurture the generous side of your child.
Model generous behavior. The best way to teach generosity to a child is by showing them how to treat others in simple ways they understand. Share your dessert with others; give your friend a book once you've finished it.
Correct your child when he displays selfish behavior with positive reinforcement rather than harsh punishment. If he won't share with his brother, explain to him that he wouldn't want to be in his shoes and suggest better ways to handle the situation. Praise your child when she is generous with others.
Tell her how proud you are of her and why. Let your child learn to work out generosity with his friends without too much interference on your part. Socialization is ... more.
