How important do you think a martial arts instructor’s lineage is?

The main system that I teach was created in 1992, as a combination of several other styles, and I find that I get far less respect both from other instructors and potential students because of that. It seems that today everyone, both martial arts neophytes and educated practitioners alike, wants a system that is hundreds of years old. Test of time I think people respect a system that has withstood the test of time (not to say that your system won't). Numerous people have seen merit in those systems as evidenced by their continued teaching. Sources: opinion .

Finding a school that can prove its origins beyond the individual women or men who taught you specifically is almost impossible under ideal circumstances. "Hundreds of years old" is impossible to prove. Most who cling to such things are just pretending or engaged in wishful thinking.

You cannot begin to prove an ancient asian lineage unless you can read that particular language. You will not find ~ancient lineage~ unless you are talking about one of the professional warrior arts (sic. Ryuha).

Even today they still do not allow "walk-in" students. But the Japanese Samurai/Ninja wannabes are all too common in most schools. Explain what you teach, how you teach and then who taught you SHOULD be enough.

Karate, a specific Okinawan art did not exist in its current form prior to 1900. The "ancient" art of Judo is literally only a few years older. And unless you are practicing in the armor of the Japanese Samurai warriors, Jujitsu practiced today is a modern flavor of a much, much older URL1 matter how old the art/practice, it is only as good as the person who is teaching it.

The best art in the world taught by an angry baffoon, or an arrogant militant dope will only be a teacher for very few thankfully. Teach well, and they will come.

1 The system I am learning is a combination of Shaolin Kung Fu, Kempo, Jujitsu, and Tai Chi, plus anything else the students bring in from other disciplines. (The place sometimes has the feel of a Martial Arts university. ) The point is: while the system itself is new, the elements it incorporates are very old.

From there it's all a matter of marketing. If your walk-in traffic wants old-style martial arts, tell them about the parts of your system which are old. If they want something which "works", tell them about the innovations your system has which makes it better than other systems.

If they want exercise talk about that. In the end, you can't teach people who don't come to class. Make it fun, keep it simple.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
