It depends on the type of air cleaner...but here are some general guidelines. It very much depends on the type of air cleaner. Most good air cleaners will have at least a two stage filtering process.
Probably a carbon activated prefilter which will remove large particles/dust...if they are carbon activated they will also remove smells. As a primary filter they will generally have a hepa filter which removes very small particulate matter like pollen...small dust...etc... Typically they say you should replace the prefilter every three months and the main filter annually. Here are some tips...for the prefilter I would recommend using a vacuum wand attachment to clean the filter occasionally...this should allow the prefilter to be used for just about as long as you would like.
For the hepa filter I have found I can get 18-24 months out of them. You can generally tell when they are going bad...if the filter has turned black and you might hear your air cleaner begin to struggle to pull air through the filter. Before purchasing an air cleaner it is important to check how much replacement filters are going to cost as that is really the biggest expense with an air cleaner is having to regularly replace the filters.
A more expensive air cleaner might have cheaper filters and would be the better bargain. I often watch for the filters to go on sale or clearance or eBay to stock up on filters. Does the filter use a fan, and if so, does it have multiple speeds? I have a ionic type filter that buzzes if the plates are dirty and need to be cleaned. I have two dogs so I replace my 3 month AC filter every month.
Since you have asthma as a topic, I suggest a multi-pronged approach. Make sure your furnace/ac filter is of HEPA quality. Change it often.
Use a room type ionic filter and clean it often. Vacuum your home using a vacuum with a HEPA filter..
