How many government employees does the state of California have?

According to the California State Controller’s Office, there are 208,675 full-time employees. This number does not include state university employees of any kind. The total number of part-time employees is 3,286.

Keep in mind that each of these numbers in each category pertain to active employees. There are a total of 25,566 active intermittent employees and 49 indeterminate employees. That’s a total of 237,576 state employees.

If we were to include all county and local government employees, the number would be much higher. There is over one billion dollars paid out to these employees on a monthly basis. Of this amount there are 291,211 separate direct deposits made each month.
