I'm writing a book and don't want to get taken advantage of by a publisher when I take it to them. I'm trying to find out the range of what I should be looking to be paid if a publisher takes the book and what percentage of sales if that applies. Amazon will give you 55% of the publishers price. I have a friend who marketed a book that was sold on Amazon several years ago and this was the percentage that you recieve, at least in 2006 this was true. Sources: personal experience .

There is no such thing as writing a book, And then taking it to a publisher. You first must have a publisher, then you would give them a rough draft of your book. If they like it they will give you a check in advance for about half of what you are going to get paid.

They will then give you a deadline to finish the book. If you do not finish by the dead line there will be penalty’s involved, like it costing you so much money a day till it is finished. The quailty of the work must represent what you originally gave them in a draft in the beginning to get your final pay.

If you miss reresented them you would have to return the original amount they paid you. So first and for most you need to go out and get a publisher and that my friend is not easy unless you know some one. They do not take Joe the Plumber off the street because he say’s he is going to write a book.

With all that said I wish you all the luck in the world, but it will not ne a easy task to do. I for got, beside the amount they are going to pay you for the book, you will receive about 2% of the sales of the book. I know that doesn't sound like much but one good book and you are a millionare..

1 How much you get will depend upon the publisher and what they think the chances are of the book's selling. Since most books do good to break even for a publisher, for an initial offering don't expect to get rich unless it turns into a best-seller. You also said with regards to the manuscript, "When I take it to them."

Your best bet is to hire an agent to do that since most publishing houses will no longer accept unsolicited manuscripts that come direct from an author. That's why you pay an agent about 10% of what you get - to get you the best deal and to negotiate with the publisher. If you just drop off a manuscript with a publisher, I hope you have a back-up copy because once you've left the premises, it will go into the well-known circular file (wastebasket).

So, if you think you have something that will do well - get in touch with an agent and let them represent you. That's the state of the publishing business in 2010. Good luck!

2 Thanks! That makes perfect sense. I guess I'm off to research agents...Does it also make sense for me to believe that the initial deal would be for a certain amount of copies of the book and that a second publishing would mean further negotiations?

" "Tell me why I should buy your books" "Does amazon kindle have downloadable Russian books or books by USA authors in Russian text?" I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
