How much homework should a 3rd grader be getting nightly?

10 minutes per day per grade There are very few studies available from what I can find that determine how much homework is useful. Homework is not taught as a subject in any Teacher courses I could find. I found that the book "The Case Against Homework" while biased by topic has good data and I recommend it.

I've been told about an hour's worth. My son had about that last year when he was in the 3rd grade. But, I also here it depends on the teacher.

Now that my son is in the 4th grade, he has 2 hours worth of written homework and 1 hour of reading a night. I agree it is a lot, but he is a dedicated student and he can take it. For him, it is not too much.

He still manages to get his free time in and enjoy other things as well. I think every school district has state and national standards they have to follow, so you may want to look up your school's standards. Since you don't elaborate on this topic, I'm not sure your opinion on what is too much and what is not enough. So, I hope this helps a little bit.

20 Minutes Twenty to Thirty minutes on most nights, 3 or 4 out of the 5 day school week. That will be ten to fifteen miinutes for the better students and up to forty-five. The homework should consist of spelling and or reading, preferably with their parents.

If it takes a great deal of time ask the teacher for hints on how to learn more effectively to shorten the time. It will make a difference if it is a private or public school. Private schools often assign more work.

I looked on your profile to see if you were from Texas. As you probably know, the state testing system, TAKS, now starts in the third grade. The third grade teachers are now under undue pressure to have a classroom full of students who can pass the test.

With so much emphasis put on the test, your child is now having more homework than third graders had before the TAKS came to the lower grades. IMHO, testing third graders is ludicrous. It is a snapshot of how a child will do one day out of their school year.

In the old days... Back in the days when I taught school (about 10-12 years ago) we were counseled to give no more than 10-15 minutes per grade level, in the elementary grades. (First through fifth grade. ) So, a third grader would get about 30 to 45 minutes of homework per night.

I would think that is still reasonable.
