How much will/should it cost to recover data off a hard drive? The data should all be there, as the drive itself?

The data should all be there, as the drive itself is not broken, but I used the wrong power cord and fried it's little electronic brain. Minimum $85, possibly more if they have to go to 'extraordinary measures'. Did you fry the power cord, or the electronic chip on the MyBook? Have you considered pulling the HD out of the MyBokk and directly cabling it to your PC instead of going through the MyBook interface?

Thanks -- that's what my son suggested; however, the fly in the ointment is that the the drive itself boots up as a virtual drive on the explorer, and then I have to enter a password to get to into the actual HD files. I just plugged the wrong power cord into the drive (wrtong voltage and amperage). Schelli 9 months ago .

To answer your question: Just buy an enclosure (about $25. )That way you can upgrade to bigger disks as required with a much smaller outlay. A 2TB disk is now less than $75.

And you can take it out and attach it to other machines if need be. I personally would never passport protect the disk. You are better off encrypting either directories or individual files.

In Nov I lost my MYBOOK to a fried circuit board on the drive itself. The offer from the service recommended by WD was $900 to start. A son-in-law knew a fellow that liked to experiment with HDs and he recovered some, but the unit overheated - finally gave up.

Find a small computer repair than can look at it and actually analyze the problem. ElB_R is right. Try putting it into another case.

I'm concerned about the "virtual drive" password... Schelli 9 months ago .

I believe that many or all of the HD cases will hold your HD and connect properly. The tech that first looked at mine put it in another case to see if that was the problem - he indicated that most are fixed by replacing the case he also referred to the HD as a Staples Special . I don't know about the password.

I would think that being in or out of the original enclosure would have nothing to do about it. I will see what I can find out about 'virtual drives. 'also I used the word case in lieu of enclosure.

They are the same.

I checked technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd97...).aspx and other nearby pages and don't know much about VHD, but I believe it is a partition on a physical drive. Read that. I saw nothing about passwords.

If you ask for that in another question, one of the experts should be able to advise. My thought is if a password is required, make it short and simple. Windows usually allows you to not specify.Aspx.

I already have a password for the drive - I know what that is - I am just wondering if the drive will be readable without the VHD and password to unlock it. Schelli 9 months ago .

I misunderstood the password problem. If you are concerned with someone else 'reading' the files, I believe they have to have the password to extract the information from the Virtual drive.

I'd like to recover some of the data from a hard drive I had to replace. Is there a device available to do this?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
