How should I go about volunteering to help with web sites for nonprofit organizations?

I am interested in volunteering for nonprofit organizations. I don't like the kind of work they tend to have volunteers do. However, I have noticed a lot of sites have out of date information or have things broken on their sites that I can easily fix.

I'm assuming having someone who can update the site would be extremely useful for any organization. What are some of the best ways to volunteer to do this? Asked by redcat 49 months ago Similar questions: volunteering help web sites nonprofit organizations Computers > Software Development.

Setting up a company or org... You are very nice man... well, honestly, this is very hard for you as an individual to approach those NPOs and tell them you can help them to fix the website cos it might go through a lot of their internal stuff. However, you might think of setting up a non-profit company or org which is specially helping NPOs to fix their website. In this way, you can be easier to approach them.

Ask I do this believe it or not. I volunteered for a website and after about a half year they started paying me as staff. Kinda cool.

All you do is ask...Just talk with the admin of a site you want to help out with, show them your interest, show them what you can do or tell them what you can do, then tell them your willing to do it for free just to help out. Usuelly you can find theese people in a ontact list somewhere if its a news site, and some sites even have forums which the admins post on. I talked to the first guy that gave me the job.

He interviewed me over MSN and we hit it off, the site then got going preaty well so I quit and went to help other sites. I found another one which was requesting help, hit them up and I started helping within a few emails. Im now helping someon get a forum going elsewhere.

A few ideas... I would highly recommend that you: 1) Contact their Human Resources department and ask to help volunteer your services for their website productions. Now, most likely, a company will not want someone altering their website, unless they have some basic experience with web publishing. To prove you have skills, do you have a website that you can direct them to to evaluate your abilities?

If you don't, then you'll probably be required to get one class (at the community college) in regards to creating a web site. ;-) 2) Don't criticize the website, but simply point out (in a kind manner) areas that you think you can help to improve. Most likely, their IT director (that you will speak with) is also the publisher of the site.

You don't want to make fun of his work, if you want to win his (or her) favor... 3) Make sure you don't threaten the webmaster's job. ;-) Make it very clear that you would like to help with site updates and that you only have only "so many hours" to volunteer. If the webmaster of the company feels that you are trying to move into his job, he'll feel threatened and will do his best to keep you out.(Most webmasters are on a contract basis and they will do their best to keep their job...) Hope this helps..

Volunteermatch.org Use this site to find nonprofits with open volunteer positions.

Contact them directly Send them an email with a couple of your comments in regards to broken links or changes to layout and then offer your services for free. If you are proactive and include a resume along with a website that explains your mission statement of wanting to help non-profits, then they'll know you aren't someone trying to take advantage of them .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
