How to promote the music of a teen pianist/composer? He's wary of internet sites because his music could be "stolen?

He's wary of internet sites because his music could be "stolen". If you're familiar with Jim Brickman or Lorie Line, his music is similar. He's played onstage as part of a Christian rock band at a mega-church for a couple of years, he's played a couple of weddings, and he's copyrighted five original compositions, both sheet music and audio files -- which isn't bad for a 14 yr old.

Try new ways of promoting music like Jamendo. Instead of going through regular ways, like finding a publishing company, why not try something that internet gave us - independent publishing. With regular publishing companies, you become, litterary said... slaves.

They own all of your works not you. They own you. They decide what you can and can't do and how much you earn while keeping the biggest part of the profit for themselves.

Now there is this site called jamendo.com. Basicaly, on Jamendo you'll offer your music, through Creative Commons/Free Art License, for free download but you will get 50% of the revenue generated and almost 100% of the donations that Jamendo visitors give to you. It maybe seems a little unfair at the first sight but for someone who doesn't have a career (yet) it is the fastest way to get you fans and when you do, belive me, you won't be left empty handed. It's a little hard to explain Jamendo's business model in a few words so I'll direct you to some web pages where you'll find more info.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamendo - wiki info on Jamendo:jamendo.com/en/static/concept - Jamendo conceptsQuote: "jamendo is the only platform that joins together :- A legal framework protecting the artists (thanks to the Creative Commons licenses). - Free, simple and quick access to the music, for everyone. - The use of the lastest Peer-to-Peer technologies- The possibility of making direct donations to the artists.

- An adaptive music recommendation system based on iRATE to help listeners discover new artists based on their tastes and on other criterias such as their location. "Independent publishing is still young but more and more groups (bands) and individual artists choose this kind of publishing. Beside Jamendo there are other models of independent publishing.

Independent record label What any record label should bring to the table for an artist are 1) expertise and 2) distribution. Expertise in terms of the ability and track record of taking good compositions and creating quality product - because without a clean, well-mastered professional recording, you're still in the semi-pro ranks of also-rans. This implies engineers and producers who have experience and know what they're doing - and can point to past recordings they've done to demonstrate their ability to take good musicians and create excellent product.

Distribution is where the temptation for artists nowadays to go the internet route. The thought is often, "why give up XXX points in royalties if I can get my songs on iTunes, CD Baby, etc. Myself?". But that thinking often proves "cart-before-horse".

Getting your music accessible over the web doesn't mean that anyone knows about you or wants to listen to you. That's where a good label comes in...whether indie, DIY or a major. What's needed is getting the word about the artist out to those who are inclined to like your music - you don't market Jim Brickman to metal heads, and you don't market Metallica to the traditional country market.

This kind of widespread marketing (which, while technically distinct from distribution per se, is known as part of it in the industry) is getting the buzz going about the artist and the music to people who will like it.So who's the most direct audience? CCM listeners? Church-goers?

Answer that question and you have the first inkling of marketing and distribution. But to answer your last question - how one begins to market a 1st CD presupposes you have an idea about target audience, and then are either reaching them directly (DIY) or working with a label who has distribution in-roads already to get the buzz going with this target. Hope this helps some.

Best to you.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
