I would make the same logical, instinctual, and observation based threat assessment I would make for any stranger of the human race if they were to unexpectedly set foot on my property and go from there. Does the alien and/or it's transport *look* threatening and if so how much? How little?
I know all bets are off on what could be and what might be but I can only use the tools I have been given to judge the alien and it's threat level/ and friend or foe status. You mention "land" on my property, this would indicate a spaceship or transportation system of some sort. Now if this alien arrived like Prot from K-Pax then I would not have much to go on but the actual physical appearance of the being.
How does the being look? Does he/she/it *look* friendly, deadly, safe, or unsafe? However if the alien "landed" using a ship I would first make a judgement based on how threatening or friendly, ominous or frightening the Unidentified "just landed in my front yard" Object looked to me.
I would trust my observations and my instincts and if I came to the conclusion that the alien was harmful or threatening then I would greet it with a shotgun, tranquilizer cannon, or a weapon of defense of some sort but if after all things considered my opinion was that the alien was friendly or at the least not an imminent danger to myself, my pets, or my home/property then I would greet the being with a glass of water and a friendly tone of voice. Except for the aliens in the movie "Signs" with their aversion to H2O I think it would be a safe bet that the space/time/spacetime traveler might be thirsty and life as we understand it for the most part enjoys water and/or relies on water to live. The pleasant, calming, "put you at ease" tone of voice we use when communicating happiness and friendliness to other humans and terrestrial beings would have a good chance of conveying the same friendly intention despite the lack of translation and cross-understanding of language between the alien and myself.
I would be very cautious with my actions. When you think about it any gesture you make could have a undesired effect. For example, I think most people would wave their hand.
Just do to our lack of knowledge of this new being we could be making a big mistake. Who knows, maybe the action of waving your hand is a sign of aggression in some martian world and could send the wrong message. Personally I think I would wait for the alien to make the first move and then calculate my response based off of his / hers / its...
I would first scream! Then run inside... take a couple of deep breaths... then go back outside and see if was safe to say hi and hope for the best :-).
I would first try to judge him with logic and then decide how to greet him.
I guess the best way to greet them is to smile at them genuinely. I'd be careful not to display any gesture that might not appeal to them or make some faces otherwise I risk being misunderstood.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
