You may actually have the space you want but don't see it. The space showing as available depends on how large the files were that you deleted. If you deleted a couple of Word documents, for example, you will not see much (or any) change in the space available.

Try this. Take a large file (say, a video, for example) and move it off the drive then check your space. If you don't have one large file, try many small ones.

Put them in a folder, move them to another drive, close Windows explorer, reopen it and check the space available. If you must, run a defragmenter, and check again. (Defraggler from filehippo.com is what I use).

Alternatively, you can transfer a large video file to the external drive, check your space, remove the file, then you should see the difference after closing and reopening whatever you are doing to view the occupied space. Also, it is helpful if you list the operating system you are using (e.g. , Mac OSX, Windows XP Pro, etc.) when you ask this type of question. Good luck!
