Your problem may be arising from a menu setting in the player instead of the actual audio book. You can investigate your audiobook players settings further OR... you can download VLC player for free and it is capable of playing practically every different media format ever made and isn't designed to repeat tracks after installation.

I am using an ipod touch 4g to play the audiobook. Since posting my question I have done as you suggested and found that by ticking the 'Part of a gapless album' box in iTunes options then resyncing with the ipod I can achieve sequential playing of each chapter. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
