I own a home with a very damp basement. I'm think I need a dehumidifier. How do I evaluate this potential need?

1 I wouldn't know how to go about evaluating the need for one, but I can't praise them enough for basements. When we moved here, our basement was so smelly from being damp. I inherited a very old dehumidifier (I think it's as old as me!) from my parents when they got a new one, and it was a lifesaver.

It stills works great and took all the "smelliness" away. I don't need to run it in the summer because my central air unit takes care of the humidity, but it's great for the damp, rainy spring season for sure.

2 A dehumidifier can solve the problem depending on the source of the moisture. Here is a suggestion from something I saw on "This Old House". thisoldhouse.com/toh/skill-builder/0,,21... use a 40 Qt dehumidifier unit in my basement and it does help a lot.

Hope this helps. Good luck! .
