Assuming you already have shoulder-length or longer hair, wash hair and allow to air dry (you will want some texture rather than perfectly straight hair). Separate hair into 2 sections (by using your finger or the handle of a fine comb, divide hair horizontally) and clip the top section to the top of your head. Using a large-barrel curling iron (at least 1", you might even want to use 2 different sizes to vary the curl size), grab a 1" section of hair and wrap the hair around the hot barrel (keep the curling iron vertical to your head), holding onto the end of the piece, being very careful not to burn your fingers.

Hold the section in place for 30 seconds then gently remove the iron. Moving to the next 1" section of hair, do the same EXCEPT wrap your hair in the OPPOSITE direction of the first curl. When you have done this all around (don't worry about each curl looking exactly the same, you want variety), unclip the top section.

Part your hair down the middle. Starting from the back of your head, repeat the steps above, alternating the direction of each curl. When you get the the front sections of hair, you have two options: 1, you can wrap the section around the barrel, with the direction of the curl going backwards, repeating on either side; or 2, use a wide barrel brush and wrap the sections of hair around it and blast with a hot dryer.

The first option will give you more of a bouncy long bang, while the second option will give you more of a gentle wave. When you are done, run your fingers (not a brush) through the hair and gently separate the curls, fluffing them out a bit. Do this once or twice but no more, you don't want to completely separate the curls.
