Setting an Islamic center on fire in retaliation for the attempted bombing at the Christmas lighting ceremony? Don't bother waiting to find out the truth, just go out and start setting fires!

Let's compare the two. 1. In the first case we have a guy who wants to kill people by blosing a bomb at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

He said he wanted to kill or injure as many people, including women and children as he could.2. Someone set fire to a part of a building. Which do you think is most egregious?

To begin with, they suspect arson but aren't sure. That is what I heard on local Portland radio today. If it is arson and they are caught and convicted they should have to pay the damages, pay a fine and do jail time for arson.

Right. And the bomber did not actually have a bomb. TurboB 13 months ago .

As far as he knew he had a workable bomb. If someone points a loaded gun at someone, pulls the trigger and the gun misfires they can still be charged with attempted murder.

I'm a little surprised at your dismay, dear , so if I may, I'll provide context. There are two.1) This sort of attitude exists in humans everywhere, everywhen. It is more rare in the U.S. because we have mechanisms to both discourage and squelch such thinking, but by no means will any system eliminate it.

Meanwhile, this person can be arrested and tried and convicted for his crime like the guy he was trying to "avenge. " 2) Go to another country, say, Iran or Pakistan or India where "wrongs" are avenged on others who are not part of the majority .. And these beat-up, robbed, sometimes killed people have no legal recourse. They're lucky if the police even show up.

So we still have a superior legal system and culture, in spite of the exceptions.

Remedial education, for starters. Something along the lines of "two wrongs don't make a right"then you can follow it up by prosecuting him for arson.

We all know some people are filled with hate and rage, and are simply looking for yet another way to express it. This person or persons heard the story, and decided to act out in a way that made an already bad situation tragic. IMHO, this person or persons should be tried for what they did: arson, and if applicable, hate crime as well.

And if convicted, sentenced as severely as anyone else who has committed arson and a hate crime. What a sad and shameful commentary on our world... Will they next be burning down the grocery store the man frequented? Dry cleaners?

Day care? Kat .

Exactly what I was going for. By acting in the same manner - violence that could be fatal- as this kid, are we not lowering ourselves to his level? Are we not supposed to be better than this, in this country?

I want to think so... And I believe most of us are. But it only takes a few hate-filled people to do a tremendous amount of damage. Kat .

Violence begets violence in this case. Wonder who taught them that anyways? Plenty of tv and video violence make Jack a dumb boy.

They are acting out from the serpent brain. This is everything humanity has been struggling to grow out of, that the higher centers of mind might be developed. We are seeing so many examples of this.It seems we are beginning to polarize in this country to extremes, those who are moving forward towards the greater, more refined potential of the human species, and those who adhere to the most primal of creature instincts and rationalize their actions via the most debased perceptions of reality.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
