Unfortunately for any Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to work correctly it requires constant programming updates so that it will know what shows come on at what times and what channels, and for this service, TiVo charges a nominal monthly fee. And if you visit the Tivo.com website, you might also see an option to buy a lifetime membership and if you can afford it, and you like the TiVo "service" I personally recommend getting the Lifetime membership.
