If rescuers can get food down to the miners why cant they get the miners out the same way?

Food and water is being sent down to the miners through "umbilical cords" - tubes four inches in diameter. Obviously, anything sent in must be small enough to fit through the tube. In order to get the men out, a much wider shaft needs to be dug.
