If you had $350 to spend on a 1 TB external hard drive, which brand would you buy? The drive must be Mac-compatible?

I'd spend $200 on a WD My Book Personal I just picked up a 1TB Western Digital MyBook at Fry's Electronics this weekend for $200. It's an external drive with USB 2.0, Firewire 400, and eSATA connectors, and it works pretty well with the Macintosh. If you really wanted to spend more money, I'd consider getting a RAID-based network server, like one of the units from Buffalo.

I like their TeraStation products which use multiple drives to guarantee data relialibility.

Otherworld Computing Mercury-Elite AL Pro I've been using OWC's Mercury Elite and Neptune lines of drives for about seven years now. I have dropped them off tables while running, hot-disconnected them, slammed them in desk drawers and just generally abused the snot out of well over a dozen drives, between the ones I use at home and those I use at work. I have never experienced a single failure.Ever.

They are as close to bulletproof as anything. My main axe at work is an Elite AL-Pro 1.0TB partitioned into four logical drives. I routinely (as in every day) read and write multi-GB backups from and to this drive. It is in constant use, and offers no problems at all.

The Mercury Elite-AL Pro Quad eSATA FireWire 800 + USB 2.0 has eSATA, dual FW800, single FW400 and USB 2.0 ports, plus a pretty rugged grounded power brick (unlike the 2-prong jobs with most other drive). Price clocks in at $299.99, well under your target even after shipping. Completely Mac-compatible.

If you want more speed with slightly greater chances of failure, they make a two-drive striped RAID case in the same line, same connectivity options, for $270. I use a case similar to this as my primary home backup (mine's mirrored 750GB). Hope this helps.

Wish I got a commission for all of these I've sold to clients...they really are superior quality, and priced reasonably. Western Digital I do Western Digital external drives on all my machines so I’d recommend the 1 TB MyBook for Mac. I don’t know diddly about Macs though, so read the reviews to make sure it will work with your hardware. 1 RE: Western DigitalI'd steer clear of the MyBooks. For our standard office configuration at work, we order both Macs and PCs equipped with either MyBook Studio or Essential edition backup drives. We send back at least a drive a week for nonspecific failures...they just stop mounting.

This is usually from the Mac OS machines, too. WDs quality control on these has really gone down lately...I have an older, metal-cased MyBook that's been pretty solid. But the new plastic jobs are just made to be cranked out as quickly as possible.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
