Is downloading off the internet always illegal?

I was just wondering, is there a way to download movies, shows, and music, while still paying a little money to the people who wrote and made the stuff. If nobody bays them, why should they keep making more? Like something where I don't spend a load of money, but I can still download stuff legally?

The digital copyright owner would have to approve it. Whoever owns the digital rights has to give the ’go ahead’ in writing. The easiest way to obtain legal copies is through a digital distributer like napster, itunes, urge or *wink* Amazon Unbox.

You must also remember that most publishers are trying to be fair to thier digital and hard distributers by having similar pricing models, so getting the digital stuff on the cheap (thats legal) is kinda difficult. As far as I understand it, downloading is not illegal - helpful thoughts and options inside I don’t believe the actual act of downloading is illegal, it’s the distributing part that is. However due to the nature of p2p apps like bit torrent, etc... if you are downloading you are automatically a distributor. As far as downloading things legally, there a few options - 1st, just download content that is licensed for distribution on the internet.

Many artists hosts songs on their websites, myspace pages, etc... Or watch TV shows, etc.. on YouTube. Many TV shows are now being distributed on the networks’ websites, but often you can just watch them live, some with ads, can’t actually download and save the files. Then of course you have stores like iTunes, where you can legally buy and download music, movies, tv shows, but I got the impression you are looking for a cheaper method. In the realm of "grey" are sites like AllofMp3.

They are legal in their home country (like Russia) and you can pay $2-3 for a whole album instead of iTunes $1 a song. This is not illegal in the US. Many people think it is, but that is what the RIAA wants you to think.

AllofMP3 operates because it has a license from the Russian equivalent of the RIAA - ROMS, and pays ROMS license fees to distribute the songs. The ROMS system is the artists have to petition for their royalties, of course many artists don’t know it exists or their RIAA agents do not petition on their behalf, so they get no royalties, this is where the RIAA’s spin comes from that sites like RIAA give nothing to the artist..

ITunes, MSN Music and many other internet retailers provide downloadable music, television and movies. The prices are more or less reasonable but you're still paying the distributer/publisher, not the artist directly. Direct2Drive provides downloadable games but you need to pay full retail price, unfortunately.

And many MMOs will allow you to download a client for a short time; what you're paying for there when you do pay is the activation code.

ITunes Big Content controls the music, TV, and movies if they were created under contract with one of the major media corporations. This covers basically everyone except for film students and indie artists. Big Content is utterly paranoid about illegal downloading; they've tried to hoard their intellectual property, using the protections of copyright law, and have failed utterly, mostly because the law (and law enforcement) has yet to catch up with the ease with which information is disseminated in our online world. At this point, the best solution Big Content has come up with is to ally with Apple on the iTunes Store.

They get the protection they want (FairPlay DRM), we get the relative ease of a fast, high-quality download. I think $1/song and $2/episode is a pretty good price, if there's a particular thing I want without wanting an entire album (buy the CD) or series (buy the DVDs). As for indie sorts, they will either post their stuff for free (e.g. Jonathan Coulton), or try to do some kind of PayPal-type sell-their-own-homemade-CDs kind of website.

No, not always. Freeware can be downloaded and used. Freeware is copyrighted computer software which is made available for use free of charge, for an unlimited time, as opposed to sharecopyrighted computer software which is made available for use free of charge, for an unlimited time, as opposed to shareware where the user is required to pay (e.g. After some trial period).

Movies, music, and any other content that someone owns that you did not purchase would be considered illegal to download.

However, with the new Amazon.Com Unbox, you can purchase and download TV episodes as soon as 24 hours after they are aired on TV, movies can be bought or rented, all from the comfort of your computer chair. Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeware .
