If so, he's not only a moron, he's insane, and hasn't read the Bible.
I believe that Harold Camping is all three of the things you suggest ... serious, crazy and hungry for attention. I think he really believes his predictions, to the extent that he can block out all failure and evidence to the contrary. S obsessiveness has almost become insane!
I think he embodies the three. He is dead serious about money making. It is obviously a desperate act to get attention and it is a crazy to play prophet at this very moment in time.
I am not trying to judge Mr. Camping. My observations suggest he has poor knowledge about God. It is very difficult to know God from books alone.
That is all he seem to have. Anyone who suggest that God will accept some of his creation and reject others, does not know God. God will never willfully or accidentally create rejects.
Even corporations that manufacture products are not that insane to do this. Therefore the rapture is insane enough to be ungodly. I see a magnificent, wonderful and loving God.
Unfortunately most will find this beautiful message about God as too good to be true. Here lies the problem with Mr. Camping's perception.
He is just seeking attention by using Christ as his tool and a lunatic. The people who follow him are bigger fools and deserve to be taken for as fools.
I just finished a hub about it..... link below:hubpages.com/hub/The-RaptureDid-we-all-g... think he's a little of all three. Serious in his belief of the Bible (But if he did read, I'm not sure how He overlooked the verse that says no one knows the time or date of the Rapture). Hungry for Attention to spread his beliefs, and just crazy, because He predicted the rapture would happen in 94, and was wrong, and now on May 21 and was wrong, and now is saying October 21?
Only a crazy person would keep doing the exact same thing and expect a different result. What I can say is that He spent a lot of money and his followers money, and still made millions, so maybe He did it to line his pockets, either way He needs to just get out of the spotlight, and stop causing hysteria.
I would have to say all three. And his wife is stuck with it all because he has control over her soul as if she was a minion of his. I don't say any of this to bad mouth him, because we are all being watched now - until October 21st.
Then we will die, simply being monitored atm (I thought we were always being monitored 1. By God 2. The government) So overall, he is telling us nothing has changed I think.
Predicting the rapture doesn't seem any more crazy than predicting anything else that only exists in the minds of people. Billions of christians are prepared to predict that that they will go to heaven on the day they die, and happy to predict that the rest of us will go to hell. The majority are a little more sensible than Harold, as at least they only put their faith in the predictions that no-one can disprove. As to the bible references, try to remember that this 'book' has had more editors than a wikipedia page, and could no longer really be said to have an author.
There is every chance that the majority of it's authors were just as serious, hungry for attention and possibly even crazier than mr Camping. So yes - I'd put him in the same camp with all those who claim to be authorities on 'the word' of a fictional being - all 3!
Misled by his own arrogance. Not only 'knowing' the day of Rapture, but absolutely sure he was going!
Actually he's a con man. So many people gave of their life savings prior to his end of days prediction to promote his lies. I have to stress that I am in the wrong business.
I should have studied religion.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
