I don't know whether there was any public support for intervention. There was no support in Britain or Canada when it was debated in Parliament, other than supporting air strikes. Hell, the Russians aren't exactly happy about it either, for that matter.
For Putin, it's good to be King. Ironically, many Westerners support the Russian action.
US does not have any support inside Syria, except salafist groups and alike. Their attempt of coup againt Assad has miserably failed and now they're stucked. They could probably be more active in Iraq, but there's not much they can do in Syria except starting an open war which could dangerously escalate.
They can continue to give support to some islamists against other islamists (and they have already started to be less selective in who they support, to answer Putin's bombings), but it's a dangerous strategy on the long run. They probably remember they're the ones who created Al-Qaïda. Putin on the other side has the support of the Syrian army, the Hezbollah, and Iran units, who can exploit on the ground the breaches he opens with his bombings.
That's a much easier position.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
