Is Republicanism a failed philosophy?

Over the past 8 years we had a chance to live under one-party Republican rule. Welfare, affirmative action and social programs have been rolled back. Basic oversight of the economy enacted in the New Deal--covering the integrity of corporate accounting, prosecuting self-dealing and insider trading, antitrust, monitoring food, drug and product safety, protections against racial and gender discrimination, and the right to unionize--have been thoroughly eviscerated.

Or, the regulatory positions monitoring the environment, government contracts, etc. Have been auctioned off to industry, so that now people inside government assist private industry in looting the general public. The criminal justice system has become highly politicized. Designer laws embedded in hugely expensive "wars" on crime, drugs, immigrants, and the poor do nothing to reduce crime, but instead target classes of people who usually vote Democratic, while graft and corruption flourish and civil rights whither away.

Roll back 8 years and change Republicanism to Democraticism. What would be different? Roosevelt built big government in order to be able to control the monopolies.

Maybe its time to do it again. Or, is our government too small to control corporate greed, or too corrupt? I have always had a soft spot for social needs, but I also have a need to put food on the table.

I would like to see the Democrats field a strong candidate, another JFK. But it doesn't look like it can happen. Maybe McCain can rein in the greed.

Its good to know that we have a great country in spite of the government.

No and Yes Republicanism as practices from the 1800s to just before the Reagan years is a legitimate and reasonable outlook on the world. Where it went wrong was when it became radical republicanism. Which amounted to little more than jingoistic slogans (no New Taxes) and a radical right wing set of moral stances (largely as a sellout to the far right religious groups).

At that point, republicans started to go after power for the sake of power alone, and that is doomed to failure. Bush the Younger is just an example of the 'power at any cost' outlook and how miserably it performs without intelligence and insight. Give me Nelson Rockefeller any day.

Or for that matter, Ike Eisenhower. Or even Barry Goldwater, who was far right wing, but honest as the day is long. He had moral stances, but he could work with others.

When the history books of this era are written, they will show that the pendulum began to swing back in 2006, and that the republican excesses were wiped away by 2016.

It is for me I work in a public school and have watch things go from bad to worse in the past 6 years. I don't mean behavior of children. I am speaking about the environments that they come from... More student on free and reduced lunch, more children whose families run out of heat earlier( by the end of January this year), a record number of families unemployed.

When I have cause to call cys- there are so few caseworkers that the issues do not get needed attention - even when there are at a crisis stance. As a parent- I can not fathom what the cost of this war be have on my children's lives. The government refusing to acknowledge the climate crisis.

And the loosening ( or totally deregulating) of environmental laws to aid big business.... I am getting depressed here so I will stop. Sources: opinion .

As worded, your question doesn't make any sense. Republican is a political party. Political parties can't succeed or fail.

Now if you are talking about what the party stands for, I'll ask: How do you know what the Republican party stands for? For that matter how do you know what the Democratic party stands for? I've never seen an official document stating what either party stands for.

If you are talking about those papers they write up at conventions, they are not official and no candidate is obligated to enact any of that stuff. Apparently you have gotten your impression of the Republicans from MSM (main stream media). All of the things you state above are what the Democrates want you to believe about Republicans.

That has no relationship to the truth. What if I had your worst enemy describe you? Do you think that would be fair?

Think about it, does it make sense that all Republicans are corrupt and all Democrats are incorruptible? .

1 Technically we had only 6 years of one-party rule. This last year had Democrats in charge of both houses of Congress. Even the six years weren't entirely Republican; the Senate was Democratic for a while after Senator Jeffords dropped out of the Republican party.

I'm just saying that to bjavascript:verifyAndSubmitComment_messageBody_requestCommentForm()e technical; I think that the thrust of your question still stands.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
