We are not the richest country by some measures--but we could be I'm not an economist, but your question interested me. I found a site that gives all sorts of interesting statistics on just about anything you can think of for many of the countries of the world. I assume it is somewhat accurate--if someone out there knows differently, please let me know.

Anyway, I looked up Gross National Income as one measure of where the U.S. Stands in the world. We are 5th on this list, behind Switzerland, Luxembourg, Japan, and Norway. I'm sure there are many other ways to look at overall wealth in this country, but I thought maybe this gives some indication where we stand.

The U.S. Is not first in any of the economic categories I looked at. The site is: nationmaster.com/graph/eco_gro_nat_inc_p... You can spend a lot of time there and get some sort of feel for where we fit into the world stage. Some of the information on energy use and production is astounding.

We are so far down the list on quality of health care, I am amazed that people think we are OK. Where are we headed. I wish I knew.

Seems that U.S.Corporations are still producing lots of stuff--just not in this country. Our rate of consumptions is really high, but our productivity has dropped for years. Some people blame our problems on too many regulations.

Reagan started the deregulate or bust movement in a big way. Giving business better conditions to compete in seems to be a great way to hold cost down. Two things have happened with the deregulation that don't make sense to me.

We not longer seem to enforce the antitrust laws--monopolies run rampant in this country--especially for products and services that are in limited supply--competition has been almost eliminated. Secondly, we allowed U.S. Companies to move oversees for cheap labor while still functioning as U.S.Companies related to trade etc. Seems if things are built in China or some other cheap labor market, the things should be sold here as foreign goods and treated as such under our laws--tariff is not a dirty word. I am just rambling at this point--as I said, I have no idea as to what is really going on.

Eisenhower, warned us about the problems related to the "military industrial complex". I read that his original text warned of the problems associated with the "military, industrial, congressional complex"--someone talked him into leaving out the reference to the role of congress in the lobbying corruption that we have all heard about. Our major corporations have way too much influence on our government--lobbying must be stopped.

Now I'm rambling about something else I know little about. We can change the way this country functions and is perceived. As voters, we can take back control of our government. The trick seems to be getting enough satiated Americans willing to do something about the problems.

Maybe Bush's legacy will be that he screwed things up so badly--Americans finally got out and voted, based on the important issues like the economy, health care, energy policies, education, war, and leave the fluffy/emotional issues behind. We can dream--right? Get out and vote the incumbents out of office.

A fresh start with a few mistakes is better than the same crap we have had for the last two decades. We can bring this country back around to its former glory and our economy will be just fine..

Total wealth, yes, the US is the richest nation... Per Capita GDP, it is Luxembourg according to aneki. Com/richest.html. Everything is relative.

We've done very well for the last 40 years or so. We've had our bumps and bruises, but overall... it's been good. Things are pretty bad now.

They are not likely to get better soon, but they will get better (probably sooner than I expect).

Depends Depends what you mean by "richest". There are other countries that have higher per-capita income. But they tend to have higher taxes and higher costs of living also.

There are also countries with lots of oil, so the govt can hand out lots of money. But that does not make lasting value. THE USA is rich in the sense that the conditions are excellent for making things of value.

Lots of schools, social stability, easy access to capital, social mobility, good if fading infrastructure, and a not too bad political system. All these things allow people to develop their potentials and generate value.

1 Most economic conditions happen in cycles where one cycle is a "correction" of past problems. We spend too much and hire too many people and we lay some off and retrench and build a new economy. If this is going to be the future, we will still have cycles but not disasters.

But today people seem to tale any downturn as 'the DISASTER. " Why? .

2 Note that the charts of GNP are not very useful-- For example Japan's GNP per capita exceeds the US's, but that doesn't account for the very high prices. Having slightly higher income does not make up for $40 melons and living in a $4,000 a month broom closet.

(excluding the United States) because we all live here.

Would you consider the United States to be an imperialist country.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
