Is there a difference between dandruff and dry scalp?

Yes the is certainly a difference between dry scalp and dandruff. When I was younger I had dandruff and was told to buy an anti dandruff shampoo such as Denrorex or Head & Shoulders. Dandruff is characterized by large scales.

When my dandruff cleared up, I was getting itchy scalp that had very small scales, more like dots of salt. That was dry scalp and that clears up for me now with just regular used of shampoo, not anti dandruff shampoo. Be sure you know what the condition is.

If your friend has dry scalp and uses an anti dandruff shampoo it could make things worse or if she has dandruff and uses regular shampoo, the condition won't clear up either. A hair care professional or physician should be able to determine the problem and the appropriate action to take. Good luck!

Yes, there is a difference between dandruff and a dry scalp. Most people mistake a dry scalp for dandruff and begin to use anti-dandruff which may cause a product buildup on their scalp. Dandruff is a hair condition that is caused by a yeast known as Malassezia yeasts. It is contagious and can be passed from one person to the other if they share the same combs, hair brushes or hair bands.

Dandruff is characterized by large white-yellow dry flakes while the flakes from a dry scalp are usually smaller. The flakes from a dry scalp will go off if the hair is washed with an everyday shampoo and well moisturized, while the flakes of a dandruff infected scalp would remain if not washed off with an anti-dandruff shampoo.
