There are 67 animal shelters in Nebraska listed on Petfinder.com. Finding a suitable pet for you and your family shouldn’t be difficult with numbers like that! What you need to adopt a pet will vary depending on the organization or breed rescue.
There is no state law that specifies what a person must do or have to adopt a pet so each shelter and rescue develops their own set(s) of guidelines. The first step in adopting a pet is to decide what type of pet is best for you and what type of pet your are best for. For instance, I would love a horse.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the land, time or money to raise a horse properly! Being realistic about your time and energy (as well as monetary) capabilities will help ensure a good match. If you visit the Petfinder site, you can also search for adoptable pets listed by owners rather than shelters.
Many of these animals need a new home for one reason or another and people are trying to place them on their own rather than take them to a shelter. Here’s the Petfinder website (with Nebraska specified): petfinder.com/awo/index.cgi?action=state....
