I've been told that people don't follow or acknowledge the Old Testament anymore, only the New Testament?

I've been told that people don't follow or acknowledge the Old Testament anymore, only the New Testament. Is that true and if so, why? I've noticed many religious questions on Askville lately and that prompted me to ask this one.

I'd like to keep this "friendly" if possible. By the way, the person who told me this could not tell me why the Old Testament isn't followed anymore, which is why I'm asking here. The New testament sets up the new law of grace.. the old testament is still there. I have a hard time reading it... It is full of violence and war etc. I prefer to read only Jesus' words... but the whole plot of the Bible is there if you read the old and new testaments... you need the Old testament to understand why Jesus came. The Bible tells the start and end of the earth and the saving help of Jesus.

Wrong idea The Old Testament is followed today by the Jews. They have been following it for 3500 years. They believe that it will never change and that you need the oral tradition also to help you understand it.

Yep its true.... There are some out there teaching that in many respects the Old Testament has served it purpose and we are no longer under its law. While there is nothing wrong in reading the OT as a source of information and study, it's the NT that is relied upon in order to determine what God would have us do. So, how did some pastors or teachers come up with this idea?

Well, they rely upon Jeremiah 34: 31-34. Its a rather long quote, so please read it, and I'll get right to their theology built around this Scripture. It should also be noted that they use a few other passages from Scripture to support Jeremiah, such as Colossians 2:14 " He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross" So in a nutshell, this theology says something like...We have the OT with the old Law and will of God, then we have the NT and the new Law and will of God.

But, Jesus comes and fulfills the old Law and therefore is no longer needed. Although the laws in each Testament are different, there is no way to determine if or how we should combine the two laws, therefore we should only be guided by the NT. Conclusion: While this seems reasonable, its only on the surface.

I find this to be poor theology as best for reasons that space and time will not allow to be addressed here. Should your friend belong to a church that does not teach the OT I strongly urge him to fully investigate this theological issue (since he doesn't know why) so that he may make an informed decision as to whether he should continue in such a church.

There are all diferent kinds of Christians. The reason why many don't follow the Old testament is because Jesus said the Old Testament is fulfilled by the New, and that those who are saved by Christ are no longer under Levitical law. Some people are "Red Letter Christians" meaning that the only Biblical text they consider important are Christ's actual words, which are printed in red in some editions of the Bible.

Jesus said.. I did not come to abolish one letter of the law. The Law came from the Old Testament. So to say that no one is follwing it any longer is absurd.

Not preaching it? Well that may be, but then only in reference, but if you talk about being changing the path you're on, that was passed down to you so what you pass on will be a better future, alal the prospertity message of your best life now, then you're certainly talking about generational stuff which again comes from the Old Testament.
