Becasue they are in containers, not the ground.
The root system can't grow (it gets stopped by the side of the container) and can't get the nutrients it needs from the soil. That, and it may be getting too much (or too little) water.

Very simple. Fertilize them. A $10 bottle of liquid fertilizer will last you for the year..(read directions) normally you add a cap full to your water can once a week.
YOU WILL BE AMAZED at the difference it makes.
