Looking for a youngish children's book that has mushrooms that store grain; mice? and kids that go through a portal?

I read this book when I was in second grade. I can only remember a couple of vague things like their being these kids/teenagers who end up somewhere else. I think mice or rats were involved in tunnels?

And I remember something about storing food in mushrooms. I really want to find the book, but that's not much to go on. I am hoping it sounds familiar to someone.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
