It's been a looooong time since I've seen it, but I believe the movie you're looking for is called " it's from 1988, and it stars Peter O'Toole and as I recall, Daryl Hannah. Ah, great movie! This is one of those movies that you sort of forget about until you are lazing about on a Sunday afternoon and channel 20 decides to pull it out of their film vault.
