I've been a Marina and the Diamonds fan for about a year now but I like to listen to all sorts of music, from Carrie Underwood to Pop/Rock/Classical and even Broadway showtunes. I understand why you would worry about your daughter listening to Marina but in my opinion there is some pretty horrible music out there, triggering and all ,but Marina and the Diamonds doesn't fall under that category. Her first album speaks about being your own person, consumerism and the not having a hollywood fairytale view of life.
And her second album, that one does have one or two songs I could see you not wanting your daughter to listen to (Teen Idle and maybe Valley of the Dolls ) but over all its an album where Marina uses the character Electra Heart to express views on heartbreak, some feminism(Sex Yeah) , the dynamic of two people in a relarionship (Power and Control, Lies, Homewrecker, Hypocrates) and songs about her character.(Bubblegum *****, Primmdonna,Radioactive, Fear and Loathing) its all really good music. Teen Idle speaks about wanting to go back in time and becoming that fake, drinking, not caring teen who experienced life instead of just hating tradition/religious ways. In the end, you know tour daughter and she knows what will trigger her.
Take a listen to the music and decide whats best.
Marina Diamandis is actually an exceptionally gifted singer/songwriter, not a band. She just goes by a band name that's a play on her actual name. Marina certainly does not glorify eating disorders and suicide.
Anyone who would assert such a thing is just having a knee-jerk reaction to songs that actually have a great deal of substance, pathos, and depth, based on real, personal and sometimes painful experiences. Fourteen-year-olds are ready to not have the world sugar-coated for them. There's nothing in Marina's songs that you wouldn't find in Shakespeare, for instance.
In fact, you'll find a whole lot worse in Shakespeare. Or in the music of The Beatles, which I grew up listening to from the age of five. In fact, in any art or music worth paying attention to addresses the difficult issues of why we are here, our mortality, our sexuality, our mistakes, our purpose, etc. Marina is a true artist, and art that is thoughtful and meaningful is exactly what any parent should be hoping their children listen to, rather than the let's-get-drunk-and-have-sex pablum that is most pop music these days.
Of course, parents may certainly want to talk to their children about whatever difficult emotions they are trying to cope with, and make sure that they are processing those emotions productively. Music can certainly be a great outlet to help with this.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
