My daughter is only 20 months old, but already has cold sores on her mouth. How can I get rid of them? We recently moved from Portland Oregon where winters are very wet to Indiana where winters are very dry.My daughter has been getting cold sores on the side of her mouth where the lips meet.
I want to find a way to heal the ones she has and prevent new cold sores from appearing. Also, I didn't realize that babies could get cold sores - is it hereditary? Asked by tallwhitegirl 58 months ago Similar questions: daughter 20 months cold sores mouth rid Health.

Yes, they can be passed from mother to child. "In addition, herpes may be transmitted during childbirth, which can be fatal to the infant. The immature immune system of the child is unable to defend against the virus and even if treated, infection can result in brain damage.
Transmission occurs while passing through the birth canal and the risk of infection is minimal if there are no symptoms or exposed blisters during delivery. The first outbreak after exposure to HSV is commonly more severe than future outbreaks, as the body has not had a chance to produce antibodies; this first outbreak also carries the risk of developing meningitis. "As far as getting them to go away, I'd suggest using an over the counter medication such as Abreva, but making them not come back...you're in a tight spot.
There is prescription medication that is supposed to limit the amount of outbreaks, but there's no known cure. Herpes are a lot like Paris lton - they'll never go away, they're annoying and painful to deal with, but essentially harmless. I hope this helps!

Cold sores I get them too, but I use abreva(unsure if it is sfe for babies I would ask the doctor about this) Cold sores — also called fever blisters — are quite different from canker sores, a condition people sometimes associate them with. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and they’re contagious. Canker sores, which aren’t contagious, are ulcers that occur in the soft tissues inside your mouth, places where cold sores don’t occur.
Cold sores are common. Though you can’t cure or prevent cold sores, you can take steps to reduce their frequency and to limit the duration of an occurrence. Cold sores usually appear on your lips.
Occasionally, they occur on your nostrils, chin or fingers. And, although it’s unusual, they may occur inside your mouth — but only on your gums or hard palate, which is the roof of your mouth. If the sore appears on other soft tissues inside your mouth, it may be a canker sore, but it’s not a cold sore.
Signs and symptoms may not start for as long as 20 days after exposure to the herpes simplex virus, and usually last seven to 10 days. The blisters form, break and ooze. Then a yellow crust forms and finally sloughs off to uncover pinkish skin that heals without a scar.
Certain strains of the herpes virus cause cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 1 usually causes cold sores. Herpes simplex virus type 2 is usually responsible for genital herpes.
However, either type of the virus can cause sores in the facial area or on the genitals. You get cold sores from another person who has an active lesion. Shared eating utensils, razors and towels may spread this infection.
Once you’ve had an episode of cold sores, the virus lies dormant in the nerve cells in your skin and may emerge again as an active infection at or near the original site. You may experience an itch or heightened sensitivity at the site preceding each attack. Fever, menstruation, stress and exposure to the sun may trigger a recurrence.
Cold sores generally clear up without treatment in seven to 10 days. If you experience frequent bouts, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to treat cold sores. Using a medication may shorten the duration of cold sores and decrease your pain.
Prevention You can take steps to guard against cold sores, to prevent spreading them to other parts of your body or to avoid passing them along to another person: Avoid kissing and skin contact with people while blisters are present. The virus can spread easily as long as there are moist secretions from your blisters. In persons with depressed immune systems, the virus can be spread even after the skin appears to be healed.
Avoid sharing items. Utensils, towels and other items can spread the virus when blisters are present. Keep your hands clean.
Wash your hands carefully before touching another person when you have a cold sore. Be careful about touching other parts of your body. Your eyes and genital area may be particularly susceptible to spread of the virus.
Avoid triggers. If possible try to avoid or prevent conditions that stress your body, such as getting a cold or the flu, not getting enough sleep or staying in the sun for long periods of time without applying sunblock. Use sunblock.
Apply sunblock to your lips and face before prolonged exposure to the sun — during both the winter and the summer — to help prevent cold sores. Ask her pediatrician! Cold sores are a type of Herpes virus, but not the kind below the waist. It’s different.
I’ve had them since childhood. It is like any virus, very contagious. My Dad got them all the time and, in turn gave some of us kids the virus.
I think it was from him kissing us, and he didn’t know they could spread. I feel badly for your baby. They are very painful.
I use Zilactin, but ask the doc. About what to use for a baby. I notice that I get them when I’m #1.
Stressed #2. Eat or drink citrus. #3 when I’ve been out in the sun.
Or #4. When I have a cold. I vowed that I would never kiss my grandkids when I have a cold sore, but I sure miss that when I do.
Good luck! Sources: experience .
1 Yeesh. I know you're probably just looking for a quick solution, but really, some questions are best answered by a real live pediatrician. Unless you like experimenting with your baby's health and personal safety, that is.

2 I'll ask when we go into the pediatrician. I don't think it's herpes because neither my husband nor I have herpes. My husband does get canker sores on the inside of his mouth, but our daughter has a sore on the corner of the outside of her mouth.
I'm really more baffled at what it is than anything.
