Sure! That's very common these days. Nashville has it, too.

I would guess they are tougher on the kids than some people here are, because the kids just keep showing up at Askville... I do my best to help with homework, but not to *do* it for them. Kat .

I would quess they try not to just give out answers..... atlantajim 14 months ago .

As far as I know, they help guide the student, and discuss the problem or assignment with them. But your are right, they don't just give out the answers. Where I live, the Homework Helpline is staffed by teachers.

Kat .

As long as they're showing the students HOW to do the homework, and not simply GIVING the answer, I don't see a problem.

Yes. How to, not giving. Atlantajim 14 months ago .

The homework helpline in my hometown not only gives guidance, but also can tell a student what the homework is for any given class, in case they were out sick that day or whatever. I think it's an excellent idea, the whole thing.

Nice touch to tell them what homework is. Atlantajim 14 months ago .

A phone line is a better way to handle it than Askville, because you get to go back and forth with the students. It's too bad that it's voice-only; it might be better with an online chat. We're happy to provide the same services, but it takes hours to turn something around, not instant.

And most of the time, when we say, "We won't answer the question for you, but here's how to start" there's no acknowledgment that they've even read it. (The same goes for all sorts of askers, in fact. ) Having posted the homework question word for word, one gets the distinct impression that they said, "Oh, if you're not just going to hand me the answer, then forget it."

In all likelihood, when the answer didn't come instantly, they went off and did it some other way and forgot all about Askville. ( how were they to know what the site would be like? )Still, it's rather unnerving to have the questions asked like that, and easy to feel affronted by the way the askers don't care.

That doesn't happen on a homework help line, where you and the person to be helped are right there with each other. I think a lot of Askvillers might be happy to do some of that, but not a whole lot.

I think you are right when you say they go off and find the answer somewhere else....... atlantajim 14 months ago .

Either that, or they just give up and fail.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
