Paper mache piggy banks! help!?

You can use any drapable porous material to saturate with the liquid adhesive. Many people use newspaper but depending on what you're making and how the shape needs to be, you can use most any kind of paper including tissue paper or bond paper, or paper towels (or a favorite of mine, especially for strength, drapability, and quickness of use, those blue "shop towels" sold in automotive stores or auto depts and even these days sometimes in groc. Stores next to the regular paper towels).

You can even use natural fabrics (or things like cotton string even). For the liquid adhesive, you can use things like starches (wallpaper paste/strong, cellulose, flours/weak, fabric starch/weak, or even sugar syrup) or glues (thinned-down permanent white glues usually). The sealant will usually be a permanent paint (acrylic/latex or even enamel) or a clear finish.

The toughest clear finish would be a polyurethane (my favorite brand/line is Varathane, water-based, gloss but it comes in other versions). But most people use a thinned down permanent "white glue" (PVA) like Elmers GlueAll just because it's cheap and they're likely to have it at home...the less-tough clear finishes though will be more susceptible later to scratching and to cloudiness from humidity if that matters to a particular project. Whatever you use as a sealant, be sure and get it *everywhere* the papier mache is exposed to the air, even down in any crevices or around hooks you've added, etc, since humidity will soften the papier mache.

Here are lots of sites that describe the various possible ingredients to use, as well as the techniques: http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+pa... http://www.google.com/search?q=cellulose... AND http://www.google.com/search?q=papier+ma... http://www.google.com/images?q=papier+mache+paste+pulp.

News paper water and flour to make the glue.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
