What's missing here is the 16% maternal mortality rates that Colonial era women had to deal with . If you're a 36 year old married guy with a 4 living children 2 dead children and a 27 year old wife with a history of difficult childbirths you may very well consider abortion when she gets pregnant again. If she gets an early abortion and survives, then it's no big deal and life goes on .

However if she dies in childbirth then you have huge personal , practical and family tragedy on your hands because you lost your wife , your lover and the person who takes care of your house and raises your kids.
