What you describe sounds like tables scans on larger and larger results sets as @LVL_NUM increases and probably RECOMPILE won't help there. But, based on pseudo-SQL, is really hard to give anything more than a pseudo-guess...

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
