Teach me about digital picture frames?

Teach me about digital picture frames I have been looking at digital picture frames on line. Seems like the ideal gift for my wife, but I want to make sure I buy a nice one, but also get the best deal for my money. So help me learn about them if you can.

How do they work? I suspect you just stick in some sort of memory device like the little chip in my digital camera. Is that all there is to it?

Does that mean that the memory size is only limited by the size of the chip I buy? So I could have like 10 million pictures in there if the chip was big enough? Are there any particular brands to avoid or to go to?

How about on line stores, or other places to buy one? What is a good size? I want her to be able to have it at work and enjoy it, but I don't think I need a wall sized display with my ugly mug popping up on it!

What should I know that I am not thinking of? And ladies only - is this a good gift idea, or does this fall in the same class as buying her a new ironing board. Help me, brothers & sisters!

Far from the "same class as a new ironing board" in my book :-) Awesome! ’Ironing Board’ means "chained to the house work" to me; where as, the Digital Picture Frame loaded with family pictures and vacation photos reminds me how happy and blessed my life is :-) Digital Picture Frames are essentially a mini computer with buttons as the only input control, card slot(s) and a power cord (I have not come across any that are battery powered yet except this key chain through Amazon). As for price, your impression from what you read and discover and decide is your best qualifier that you got "the best deal for ’your’ money".

When you make your decision on which one you want to get for her, try to find it at a store where you can easily exchange it like Costco or a local photography store if anything at all is not right with it. Also, nearly all manufacturers honor an excellent warranty on these high-end electronics. Sometimes it is worth the slightly higher price to buy it locally so that you not only have the option of taking it in for exchange but also just to get assistance with operating it.Costco.Com is where I got mine for Christmas gifts.

As a member, you get their satisfaction guarantee for any reason. They were even able to answer my questions on "how do I ...?" I bought the Philips brand when they had the one with the nice walnut frame. My In-laws and my Mom & Dad have been loving them! When I bought this one, it only works with JPG photos; but the new ones will display, JPG photos as well as video clips, sound and more.

Reading about them is your best source of information on them. The more you read about them, the more you will know what you want in features. Be careful not to go to information overload though ;-) Most digital picture frames have internal memory (the amount varies by frame) as well as accepting common cards that Digital Cameras take like Compact Flash (CF) Cards, Secure Digital (SD) Cards, and/or Memory Sticks, etc. Read the information provided with the Picture Frame to determine which cards it will accept and the size limitations of the Cards if there is a limitation and what format the media needs to be for it to accept it and work.

Since you have been looking online, see if you can locate each frame’s user instructions usually through the brand’s website in PDF to read its details; ie, Philips for PhotoFrame 7" and the user manual for it. The frames that I bought were very new and the internal memory, while quite sizable, would only recognize a certain number of pictures even though I had loaded many more than it would display. I loaded a 256Mb Compact Flash card with pictures, inserted it in the frame and the picture frame had no trouble with it.

Some New Digital Picture Frames will connect to your computer via USB now to load pictures on them. Amazon. Com has several to choose from as well with the added benefit of reviews for many of them right in the order page and most of these reviews are from consumers that have tried the product.

Also see what you can find online for reviews of any that you are considering. I entered a search on Digital picture frame reviews and was returned pages of results to choose from like this review for the Philips 9FF2M4 on C/Net Reviews. C/Net has a lot more than just reviews to offer as well for later reading ;-) As for size, I haven’t seen any yet that are stated as being larger than 12".

If you have a local store where you can experience them hands-on, definitely go and play because each one is a ’one-of-a-kind’ in the way it operates or displays. And there is no substitute for first-hand impressions like seeing the actual size of the displayed image compared to the stated size of the frame or the resolution of the image when it is displayed on the picture frame versus on your computer screen, and so on. When I loaded the pictures on the digital picture frame, they really looked better than they did on my monitor because the display resolution was so much better on the picture frame.

Hope this is of some assistance! All the Best! Sources: Personal experience and continued feedback from my family.

To my understanding, plug and play I don't exactly know which chip goes into one, but to my understanding, it is plug in a chip and the frame rotates through all the pictures that are on the frame. If you want a good deal on one, I would suggest you get the one they sell at costco. It is around $130 (at least in my area) and if you / your wife doesn't like it, their return policy is great. It's also either 4x6 or 5x7, so it's not that big... I haven't gotten one yet, but I have been considering it.

I just haven't had the desire to shell out $130 for a frame..... hope this helps! Sources: personal opinion .
