Tech mystery - my ATT phones are down, ATT Yahoo dsl down, but can access Internet via Firefox. Why? Gotta know!

AT&T scheduled repair service since my phones do not work. Problem traced to outside line. Will take 3-4 days for AT&T tech to show up.

Can't access Internet through AT&T, my ISP provider - nothing happens when I double click AT&T icon. But clicking on the Mozilla Firefox gets me online... How is it possible for Firefox to work, when AT&T doesn't? Have only one phone line.

Same phone jack, same wires, same DSL box, same PC. Er... same electrons, I presume. Everything should be malfunctioning.

But isn't. Gotta know what's going on! Too fascinating to ignore.

1 Sometimes the wireless can catch a signals from outside. So check which network, you're connected to.

I thought I was connected to AT&T. Mysteriouser and mysteriouser...

3 What whocares said, but another conjecture is that your phone line may not be completely dead. DSL rides on a carrier frequency outside of the voice band. The head end, called a DSLAM, resides between you and the phone company's central office.

If there's a cut in the line between that and the DSLAM, you may have packet service even if you don't have voice.

Metahobby replied to post #3: 4 OK, IchtheosaurusRex. That's something like the AT&T tech said. Voice part gone but data part coming through.

Didn't explain how though. I don't have a wireless connection so it can't be I'm catching an outside signal. So, er... some frequencies can travel over partially damaged wires?

Firefox uses different frequency than IE? Is that the answer? Or am I just comprehensively challenged?

IchtheosaurusRex replied to post #4: 5 Yeah, it's like that with your phone line. Not a different frequency for FF; it doesn't care about the datalink part. Neither does IE, but it probably has some different authentication with Yahoo.

DNS settings, probably. I have a rack of books literally a yard wide just on datacom protocols, so I won't try to explain it all.

Why are mobile phones called "cell" phones.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
