The greater cost of services associated with remoteness within boards such as the former Argyll and Clyde and Ayrshire and Arran is reflected in the remoteness indicator. The remoteness indicator takes the average road kilometres per 1,000 population for the board as a whole, and therefore takes account of dispersed island population, though does not take account of sea miles between islands and mainland. The remoteness adjustment has been reviewed by researchers.
