Control Panel .. Not a Vista fan (hey, with the new Service Pack 1 coming shortly for Vista, it's only half as slow as XP! ), but if you open Start Settings ControlPanel and then SoundsAndAudioDevices... there is an icon for Place on Desktop or SystemTray - make sure this is checked Yes. Ditto for Network Connections ... (These are for XP, I "think" that Vista has something similar, but you may need to also Go To Classic or XP View for the Control Panel to show these.... (Virtually all my PC customers went back to XP, but that's quite a job!..) Hope this helps!

Sometimes that does the trick. When you restart try going back into your menu options and see if it lets you check your volume and network icons.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
