Unconventional way of cooking a turkey...does this make sense?

A friend of mine says his wife cooks their Thanksgiving turkey "upside down," which is to say the breast side goes down on the bottom of the pan, leaving the dark meat on top. Their reasoning for doing it this way is that they claim the juices from the dark meat drip down onto the breast, ensuring the white meat remains juicy. To the cooks in the audience, is there a downside to cooking one's turkey in this fashion? It makes sense to me. The only down size is that the turkey will look pretty strange on the platter, but once its slices no on will know. (I wouldn't have taken an answer slot, but the computer would let me into the discussion slit.) Sources: personal opinion .

Its really a good way to cook the turkey... ....being that it has to cook for such a long time. Just think there would be no need to baste the turkey every 20 min or so, which in my opinion doesn't really do much at all. By cooking your Turkey "Upside Down" all the juices constantly marinate the bird.So your white meat and dark meat will remain moist.

In the cavity of the turkey it is always nice to place some aromatic fresh herbs like, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and thyme. Around the outside of the turkey it would be nice to use some quartered pieces of apples, onions, celery and carrots. This will provide you with some extra liquid that will marinate the turkey and help with even cooking.

During the last hour of cooking you should flip the turkey right side up so it can brown evenly and look pretty for you and your guests. :) P. S don't forget to let it rest for at least 10 min.

Before cutting into it. This way all the juices will remain in the meat not squirt out as you cut into it. Enjoy it HankMoody I wish you and your family a very "Happy Thanksgiving"!

I've been doing that for years, and yes, the inversion is superior. Chew on that linguistic puzzle for a bit. Yes, the fat in the back then drips down into the dry, pasty, flavorless white meat breast that then acquires something resembling flavor and becomes somewhat edible. At least it doesn't get overcooked, which is what everyone else does.

Downside is one: no crispy skin covering the bird, since that curved hemisphere of skin is underneath, dissolving into juices that make a pretty good gravy, too. But you're not there for the skin anyway, are you? It's all about the meat.

1 I can't really say Hank - except that depending on the size of the turkey (meaning .. . Am I able to lift it and manipulate it) I usually cook the think on a rack and I start it upside down and turn it about half - way through. Maybe it makes a difference, maybe it doesn't.

See the meat on the bone is just that - meat on THAT bone. The drippings are going to fall into the pan no doubt, but how much of them actually soak into another part of the bird with meat on another bone....well it might be a bone of contention. :-) .

2 Seems to me that the nice crispy skin on the breast would be stuck to the bottom of the pan, and pull off when you removed the turkey! .

" "when cooking with wine" "This is a cooking question.

What different hebs should I use when cooking.

I forgot to put my turkey in a bag while cooking it how do I keep it moist.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
