Using jquery to filter Wordpress posts by categories?

Firstly, it'll help if you don't connect the different classes together (ie, just put a space between "news sports region"). That way, you can apply a class to one particular class ("news", or "sports"), instead of having to do something complicated to select part of the class (like divclass*='news-'). I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
