I only have this one story - but it's pretty famous in our family So, when I was a little kid, we used to go up to this fishing lodge in Minnesota on Lake Ely. My whole family would go and spend a week fishing. Well, my Dad, my great Uncle Ben, my Granddad and my Uncle Ole were fishing like crazy all week - and they hadn't caught anything.

I got to go out with them for a couple parts of a couple days, but I was so little (probably 5 or 6), I couldn't keep quiet enough, especially for Uncle Ben, who was a serious fisherman. So, one evening, after they had come back for the day, I got my dad's reel and was fishing off the pier - just a simple hook, bobber and worm. I hooked one.

Of course, I was screaming -and I managed to hold onto it until my Granddad and my sister came down and helped me reel it in. Largemouth bass and I have no idea how large it was, except, it was the largest one in the lake Ely area that week. I got on the radio and my picture was in the paper and the darn fish was mounted and I still have it today.

But, the coolest part was my Uncle Ben - he, like, didn't talk to me the rest of the trip and it was KILLING my Grandfather. He hung out with me just to see my uncle ben and then he would laugh till he cried. He'd parade me past Uncle Ben, read a snippet from the paper and just watch him fume.

Of course, I didn't catch all that then, but this is like my Dad's favorite story of all time. He tells to everyone and I remember him telling it at Uncle Ben's funeral and everyone remembering him fondly. He was my favorite Uncle for sure.

The is about the one that COULDNT get away... Avid fisherman here. Grew up fishing with dad and developed a love for it. During high school and college I lost intrest in it, only to have the love return in my mid-20's.

Group of close friends would make sure we went fishing at least every other weekend at various places around us(We live in Connecticut). We focused on Bass, but were not adverse to cat's, trout, pickeral etc... So, its a warm summer night and we decide that we're going to head to a place called Goodspeed Opera House, on the Connecticut River. There is a large dock where the rich ppl park their yachts.

Late at night there is no one around and the fishing can be great. We figure, lets try for some catfish, at night, in the river. Really, how much better does this get... 4 or 5 close friends, a warm summer night on the river, a cooler of drinks, fishing under the stars. As any catfisherman knows, you load up the hook with stink bait (or animal parts), slip on a lead weight, and heave.

Let it sink and wait. Long periods of down time, with the possibility of a few moments of sheer excitment. Catfish feed off the bottom.

So do other things. I'll get to that in a moment... Its about 2:00 am. We've been fishing about 30 minutes.

Nothing's hitting. My buddies line starts cutting a wake in the river. Bait's moving, and its not the current.

He grabs the pole, reels in the slack, feels the fish, and sets the hook. Bingo! He's got it.

Not much of a fight (channel cats are NOT the big ones). Being so dark out, with only minimal lighting on the dock we cant see what hes got, not that the cats jump. Fights over, we hear it splashing at the surface.

Dock is about 2 feet off the water, he kneels down to grab it and SCREAMS like a 2 year old. What he though was a cat, was a 3 foot long eel that proceeded to wrap itself around his exposed arm. Now, none of us knew what was going on, so we run to him, only to have him run past us, down the dock, with his pole dragging ass behind him.

Many men, during a lifetime, have those times where things don't go the way they wanted. If those times do happen, they wish...no, they PRAY that no one is around to see it. This was one of those times.

Not only did our friend continue to scream and run up and down the dock, he proceeded to break his pole and knock unknown amounts of bait into the river. Good friends that we are, once knowing the whole situation, failed to see any option on helping him.10 minutes doesn't seem like a long time, but when your adult friend is crying like a toddler with wet diapers, screaming for help, its an eternity. The irony of this, is that no matter how hard he tried to unwrap the eel (which by now, was easily around his arm 5 loops), he couldnt do it with one hand.

We eventually got a knife and cut the eel off (more bait, to replace the stuff we lost). The slime off the eel was literally all over our buddy. He was out of breath, sweating and VERY upset at the rest of us.

To this day, some 15 years later, we still talk about this and laugh as one of the best time's we've ever had. Sources: Personal Experience .

I'm no fisherwoman, but I have a funny one I remember as a kid! Sorry the details will be a little sketchy... My family was on an extended vacation aboard a family members large boat (yacht? ).

We were somewhere around Friday Harbor in Washington State. As kids we occasionally threw in a line from one of the fancy poles that were on the boat. My brother had put a piece of chum?

On this line and threw it in off the dock-no action for a long time. Eventually dinner was ready and we got back on the boat and left the pole with the line in the water since nothing was going on. We no sooner sat down when we could hear the line spinning out-it made a lot of noise. So all the kids went running out and grabbed the pole which was bamboo?

, when it broke, we all grabbed the line. Of course, my father by now had caught up to us kids and was yelling at us to let go of the line because it was metal (apparently high test?). Ouch!

A neighboring boater came with a net and we were able to pull this "monster" in. Turns out it was a "skate", and I seem to remember it being about 5' wide. I was terrified!

Somewhere there is a picture, I just wish I had it to back up my story! Sources: my life .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
