No difference God's law is God's law. Jesus said not one tiniest little mark in the law will be changed until all is fulfilled. The difference is that Jesus mself fulfilled the law, and the New Testament is just that, a testament to s love for us and our response to Many people see the plethora of laws God gave the Israelites when the ancient theocracy was being established and think 'that was then and this is now'.
That is true to an extent. We are not a theocracy and so the theocratic laws do not apply to us. However the Ten Commandments will always hold -- they are universal. It is still not OK to kill, lie, cheat, steal, etc. When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was, He replied it was to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself.
These are definitely commandments in the New Testament. But Jesus also said that all the law and all the prophets are based on these two commandments. Thus, if you keep those two commandments, you are still keeping the law.
Only you are keeping it with the spirit of the law intact rather than trying to perform all the little minutae Jesus was so furious with the Pharisees and teachers of the law for adding to the law. The overriding commandment is to love. This is not an emotion or it could not be commanded.
Love is a decision you make to work for the best for the beloved. Regardless of problems for yourself. It's the mother getting up for the umpteenth time at night to a sick child.
It is the wife waiting for her husband while he is in the armed forces overseas and keeping herself faithful and his reputation high.It is our Lord mself taking the punishment for rebellion we have earned so consistently and accepting scourging and crucifixion and, finally, death itself so that we would have a way back to communion with God if we so choose. And yes, it is also the little notes from a husband, the special dinner from a wife, and all those thoughtful things that can lead to the wonderful emotional side of love. So the law throughout the Bible is CARE.
Care about those around you. Care about God's reputation. Care and get your eyes off yourself.
When you do this, it's really hard to lie, cheat, steal, kill! You are too busy taking care of others. The neat thing about that is that when you do love God and turn to He does indeed become your owner, your Good Shepherd, and you have been bought with Who better to know you and take care of you than your Creator and Redeemer?
At that point you are then completely free of concern for yourself and free to follow m through following s gracious Holy Spirit in you and care for others. That is where the law is leading and what Christ said in much fewer words.
Written by different people, at different times, for different reasons, based upon different beliefs.
The law is the same. The difference is that the New Testament presents two things: final forgiveness of all sin (read the whole book of Hebrews for how, "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins" (Hebrews 10:4)), and God's help in obeying s law (not sinning anymore) thru the gift of the Holy Spirit. Under the Old Covenant, these things were available only by faith that God would provide them, but were not actually present.
Now we have the New Covenant available and these two things are actually available to all who want them.
There are no laws in the New Testament No one in the Old Testament was able to obey the law so God sent Jesus to free us from it. Now, in the New Testament it says to accept Christ as your personal Savior. He now sits at the right hand of God to intercede for us.
He is our advocate. The Bible also says that he who lives by the law (Old Testament) shall be judged by the law. And remember, no one could obey them.
I love the fact that He gave s life for me that I could be saved and be forgiven of my sins and that I shall have eternal life. My suggestion is stick with the New Testament for a while until you really understand it. Then go back and read the Old Testament.
Otherwise it can get very confusing. Another way to put would be the Old Testament is what was, the New Testament is what IS.
