San Diego has slightly better economic growth and lower unemployment than other cities in California, but the economy is still very depressed overall. The State of California has frozen hiring and pay, and the City of San Diego is facing serious fiscal deficits. However, compared to other areas of California like Sacramento, Bakersfield, and Fresno, it is much better overall due to being a top travel and vacation destination.
The overwhelming majority (43%) of jobs are either directly or indirectly financed through the US Military. San Diego is home to several military installations, including the Naval Airfield on Coronado Island and the Marine Training Facility near the San Diego International Airport. This is one reason probably why the labor market is slightly better than average.
