Michael Shaara or Shelby Foote Michael Shaara only wrote one Civil War novel, The Killer Angels, but it has been greatly acclaimed. It won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and then served as the basis for the movie Gettysburg. In fact, the history is so good (and so influential in the nuanced way its depicts the Confederate leadership especially) that many people mistakenly believe that this book is a nonfiction account of the battle.
The writing is very strong. Shelby Foote also only wrote one one Civil War novel, Shiloh, but he followed it up with an epic historical narrative of the entire Civil War, titled (appropriately) The Civil War: A Narrative. This 3-volume work, which is almost 3,000 pages long, is solid history, but it is written by a novelist, so it reads more like fine literature.(If you've ever seen Ken Burns' documentary The Civil War, you've heard Foote speak, as he was one of the main people interviewed for the documentary, with his distinctive southern drawl and his flair for memorable anecdotes.)
