What digital SLR camera should I buy - Canon Rebel Xti or the Nikon D80?

I am torn between the Canon Rebel Xti and the Nikon D80. I really like both of them and am confused. The reviews say that both are nearly the same.

I want to know from personal experience which one is better. I have used a Canon camera before so that might be a positive / negative. Asked by mordani 48 months ago Similar questions: digital SLR camera buy Canon Rebel Xti Nikon D80 Arts > Photography.

Cannon Vs. Nikon What camera you buy is pure personal preference. I, being a nikon user can say from experience that Nikon cameras IMHO are built tougher and better for those of us with normal sized hands, the XTI grip was apparently built for a child.

The D80 has a more professional look and feel, even more so when you add the vertical grip. Cannon has less sensor noise at high ISO. Nikon Auto Focus is much faster Both companies have pros and cons, but don't just look at the body you are planning to buy look at the lens lineup from the company.

Always spend more money on lenses than on your camera body. Chriscorbin's Recommendations Targus Vertical Battery Grip for the Nikon D80 Digital SLR Camera Vertical grip adds balance, extra battries and a extra shutter button for shooting in portrait.

New Toys That's a tough one to answer because there aren't many people with extensive experience with both. Once you start playing the DSLR game, you tend to stick with one brand because you develop a collection of lenses, and other accessories (like flash units) that only work with that brand's camera bodies. I use a Nikon D80 (upgraded this year from a D50) and I really like it a lot.

The Canon XTi is selling for around $530.00 these days, substantially cheaper than a D80 which is going for around $780.00. (Plus lenses, of course) From a price point of view the Canon is a better deal but, as with anything else, you get what you pay for. The Canon uses Compact Flash cards, the Nikon uses SD cards.

That's a consideration if you have multiple devices that use memory cards and you want to minimize complexity (I have a Treo 650 and a Nikon P5000 pocket camera and my wife has two Kodaks that also use SD cards so we only have to buy one kind and we can trade 'em off as needed. ) My P5000 also uses the same flash unit as the D80 so I only had to buy one. If you have used Canons before you'll save a little time and aggravation on the learning curve, which is substantial, as you'll already know some of the terminology.

What really makes a difference is lenses and that depends on what you want to do and what you want to spend. Both can be purchased with decent kit lenses and that's the cheap way to start. You'll save some money in the long run though, by skipping the kit lens and investing in a better lens that is tailored for your particular type of shooting.

A good zoom lenses with vibration reduction will cost you a bit (or a lot) more but it'll be a lot more versatile. I have 6 lenses but I only use three of them on a regular basis (an 18-200mm VR zoom and a 50mm 1.8 prime with a 55-200 mm VR for backup). If I had bought them up front it would have cost less in the long run than buying the cheaper lenses that I started with.

And you won't spend half your time browsing the catalogs (and saving your pennies) looking for a better lenses. Before buying a body, check out the available lenses (and prices) and see which works better for you. Bottom line though, is that both are fine cameras and it comes down to personal preference.

Head down to the camera store and pick 'em up and play with 'em a bit. See what fits your hand better. Shop around. Prices vary a LOT.

It all depends Both cameras are great. The D80 is probably a little nicer than the XTI but it is also more expensive. I think one of the biggest differences is how they feel in your hand.

The XTI is smaller and some people complain that it is too small, the D80 is said to fit better in your hand. So, you should probably physically hold them and see which you like. There are positives and negatives for both, I own the XTI and I love it, but I also konw people who own the D80 and they love that camera as well..
