What do you think the biggest problem is that contributes to the lack of tolerance in our society?

That was a very eloquent response, amitkumarghosh. Thanks for that! It makes a lot of sense actually.

Racial intorlerance. Religious intolerance. Any intolerance can be reduced down to fear of the unknown and the subsequent rebellion against that which we don't understand.

Consider the eloquent statement of Stevie Wonder. "When we believe in things that we don't understand then we suffer. " Superstition ain't the way.

As a society, we strive to put labels on conditions, issues or those things we know little about. It does nothing to help us understand, but it gives the illusion we know what we're talking about. So, what's the basis of racial intolerance?

Same as the basis for any other intolerance. We rebel against that which we know nothing or very little rather than get close enough to really understand it. So, we suffer.

The research shows that very moment we start identifying any group, may it be religious, ethnic or other, we start perceiving people who are not part of the group as outgroup. And moment we start see others as part of outgroup we start treating them differently. If it happens psychologically we call it prejudice and when it starts reflecting on our actions and behaviour it is discrimination.

There are two possible path forward. One as refered as characteristics of mature or self actualised personality, we are able to get rid of group identity and consider ourselves individuals propelled by virtues of rationality and empathy. Second, if we are greared towards some superordinate goal or a goal that binds as all like climate change.

However, it is our basic insecurity about our future or resources that makes us believe that we would be better without other group ( a completley false perception). So lack of tolerance is phenomenon which was there before and it is still there and I reckon unfortunately will exist in future. The only thing that matters as a society are we able to react and contain these intolerences to bare minimum.

People do get along from all kinds of beliefs, even those beliefs that are diametrically opposed to each other. The problem exists within the individual that does not love oneself, thereby feels threatened by anything that is not a match with his/her identifiers.

In a time of crisis, you find many overlooking their mismatches and looking at how they are all in the same boat.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
