What does it mean when your left arm goes numb?

OK I know that this is a symptom of a heart attack, but I had this while I was sitting in my chair at work the other day, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't having a heart attack. I am only 22 years old and healthy, and my heart felt fine. Why did my left arm go numb?

Since you had no traditional symptoms of a heart attack You probably are suffering from nerve compression, or pressure on a nerve supplying your hand or arm. This can be as simple as, if you were leaning an your elbow for too long, you can put pressure on your ulnar nerve. Also pressure on any nerve originating in you neck area can cause intermittent numbness depending which way you turn your head.

This sounds crazy but it is true. Pressure can be caused by a variety of things such as bulging discs or artheritic changes. If it happens again be aware of the position of your arm and head.

Try moving and see if this helps. If you continue to have this problem, you should see an orthopedic DR who can order an MRI and nerve studies to try track down the problem. There are other things that can cause this, but nerve compression probably is the most common.

Actually, I think it is more a warning sign of a stroke. A series of these is called a Transient Ischemic Attack or TIA. A TIA is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage.

Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce your risk of a major stroke. Most strokes aren't preceded by TIAs. However, of the people who've had one or more TIAs, more than a third will later have a stroke.

In fact, a person who's had one or more TIAs is more likely to have a stroke than someone of the same age and sex who hasn't. TIAs are important in predicting if a stroke will occur rather than when one will happen. They can occur days, weeks or even months before a major stroke.

In about half the cases, the stroke occurs within one year of the TIA. What causes a transient ischemic attack? TIAs occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn't get the blood it needs.

The symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Most TIAs last less than five minutes. The average is about a minute.

Unlike stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no injury to the brain. What are the symptoms of a TIA? It's very important to recognize the warning signs of a TIA or stroke.

The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary: Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination Sudden, severe headache with no known cause On the other hand, maybe it just fell asleep or some other cause. But I had TIA's at 43, and found I had a blocked right carotid artery, which required surgery. But by taking care of it, I didn't stroke out.

Sounds like you pinched a nerve Given your age, if that was the only symptom, I would say you simply had your arm pressed against the chairback wong, or had an extra fold of shirt, or something like that, and made your arm go to sleep. If it repeats often, and you haven't been able to pinpoint something you are doing to make it happen, you might check with your regular doctor, because there are oher medical conditions that might cause those symptoms.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
