What does ps3 hardrive do?

Sony says that it is usually given to store music,videos,pics,etc. But it does not tell you that you can hack it through a software in order to make games run using a hard drive. This saves a lot of money as in the case where you buy game dvds. If you have any ps3 store near your house,why don't you go and check it out.
